Funding for 3, 4 and 5-Year-Olds

All 3, 4 and 5-year-olds living in England are entitled to 15 hours of funded early learning per week, regardless of income, benefits, or family circumstances. This equates to 570 free hours per year and begins the term after your child turns 3 years old, continuing until the term after their 5th birthday or until they go to school.

Typically, this is offered as 15 hours per week over 38 weeks of the year.

If you qualify for the working parent entitlement, you can combine these universal 15 hours with an additional 15 hours, giving a total of 30 hours of funded childcare over 38 weeks.

If your child already receives the funded childcare for 9 months to 2-year-olds and you remain eligible, they will automatically move to 30 hours funded childcare from the term after they turn 3.

Key Steps:
  • Reconfirm Your Code: Continue renewing your childcare code as usual. The same code will allow you to claim the 30 hours.

  • Documentation: Provide your child’s birth certificate to the Kindergarten
  • To apply or check your eligibility, visit the application link below.
  • We will then ask you for a contribution of £12.50 per full session or £10.20 per half session.

Help with Childcare Costs Through Tax Credits or Universal Credit

If you are an existing tax credits customer, you may be able to claim back up to 70% of your eligible childcare costs for children under 16 (or under 17 for disabled children). The amount you can receive depends on your income, with maximum weekly support of:

£122.50 for one child
£210 for two or more children

Universal Credit can cover up to 85% of your childcare costs. This support is available to families where single parents or both parents in two-parent households are in paid work or have a job offer. The maximum monthly amount reimbursed is:

£951 for one child
£1,630 for two or more children

At Chartham Holistic Kindergarten, we provide care for children up to age 6. Parents can use their tax credit or Universal Credit childcare payments to pay us directly, provided they remain eligible.

Tax free childcare

You can get up to £500 every 3 months (up to £2,000 a year) for each of your children to help with the costs of childcare. This goes up to £1,000 every 3 months if a child is disabled (up to £4,000 a year).

If you’ve already registered, you can sign in to your childcare account.
If you get Tax-Free Childcare, you’ll set up an online childcare account for your child. For every £8 you pay into this account, the government will pay in £2 to use to pay your provider.

You can get Tax-Free Childcare at the same time as 15 or 30 hours free childcare if you’re eligible for both.

Eligibility
Your eligibility depends on:

whether you’re working (employed, self-employed, or a director)
your income (and your partner’s income, if you have one)
your child’s age and circumstances
your immigration status

Sustainability Lead: Milly Woodrow (Founder and Director)

Effective Date: August 2025

1. Introduction
At Chartham Holistic Kindergarten, we understand our responsibility to the Earth and the importance of cultivating environmental consciousness from the earliest stages of life. Rooted in a slow-paced, nature-connected approach, our climate action plan aims to foster deep, lived experiences of sustainability that are embedded naturally into our rhythms and routines—not added on artificially.

2. Sustainability Lead Role
As the nominated Sustainability Lead, Milly Woodrow will:
Integrate sustainable practices into everyday operations and pedagogy.
Guide staff and children in deepening their relationship with the natural world.
Ensure that all sustainability efforts align with the holistic ethos of the kindergarten.

3. Environmental Learning in Daily Life
We believe the most meaningful sustainability education is experiential and woven into daily life. We will:
Encourage children to care for the natural environment through seasonal gardening, composting, and nature walks.
Support nature-based play using organic, recycled, and found materials.
Explore the cycles of the seasons, weather, and local ecosystems through storytelling, art, and sensory exploration.
Promote reverence for all living things and instil habits of care, gratitude, and responsibility.

4. Sustainable Practices in the Setting
We will continue to align our operational choices with our ethical and ecological values:
Natural Materials: Use biodegradable, non-toxic, and ethically sourced materials wherever possible—for play, art, cleaning, and care.
Minimal Waste: Avoid single-use plastics and prioritise reusable or compostable items.
Composting & Recycling: Maintain simple systems to minimise waste and involve children in these processes.
Energy Use: Conserve energy through mindful use of heating and lighting. We are committed to low-impact living and outdoor-led activity.
Food Practices: Support seasonal, vegetarian snacks and meals using organic or locally sourced ingredients when possible.

5. Outdoor and Nature-Based Learning
Our outdoor spaces are an extension of our classrooms and a cornerstone of our climate approach:
Children regularly participate in caring for garden beds, trees, and wildlife-friendly spaces.
Encourage observation of natural changes—clouds, soil, insects, birds—as a way to foster awareness of interconnectedness.
Create spaces that welcome biodiversity: log piles, wildflower corners, and natural play features.

6. Community and Culture
While we do not run formal sustainability workshops, our community is united by shared values of care, simplicity, and nature reverence. We will:
Invite families to contribute gently used materials or natural items for creative use.
Encourage open conversations with families about the ways we honour nature in the setting, modelling sustainability through example rather than instruction.
Maintain our screen-free policy as a commitment to deeper presence and environmental simplicity.

7. Travel and Localism
Promote walking, cycling, or car-sharing among staff and families where feasible.
Source local and ethical goods to reduce transport-related emissions.
Keep supply chains simple and thoughtful, in line with our low-impact philosophy.

8. Review and Reflection
While we do not conduct formal sustainability audits, our commitment to climate action is expressed through lived daily choices. Reflection and adaptation happen organically through:
Regular staff dialogue and peer-sharing.
Observing the children’s responses to the natural world and building on these experiences.
Trusting our shared commitment to simplicity, responsibility, and Earth care as guiding principles.

Conclusion
At Chartham Holistic Kindergarten, sustainability is not a checklist—it is a way of being. Our climate action plan reflects a commitment to nature that is quiet, consistent, and deeply embedded in the child-centred, holistic rhythms of our setting. We hope to nurture a generation that honours the Earth not because they were told to—but because they remember loving her from the start.
