We are based at Chartham Holistic Kindergarten in Chartham, near Canterbury, and every Monday during term time we open our doors to families with young children for a gentle, beautiful morning of play, rhythm, craft, song and story.

In a world that often feels busy, noisy and hurried, young children need something very simple… time, warmth, rhythm, imagination and connection.

They do not need to be rushed into growing up.
They do not need constant entertainment.
They do not need screens, pressure or overstimulation.

They need space to play.
They need songs, stories and simple seasonal beauty.
They need hands that can make, eyes that can wonder, and hearts that feel held.

That is the spirit behind our Waldorf Steiner Parent & Child Group at Chartham Holistic Kindergarten.

Inspired by the Steiner Waldorf approach to early childhood, our group honours the young child as naturally imaginative, deeply sensory, and beautifully connected to the rhythms of home, nature and the seasons.

Rather than rushing from one activity to another, our mornings unfold with a calm and familiar rhythm. Children quickly come to know what happens next, and that gentle repetition helps them feel safe, settled and confident.

We begin with a warm drink and time for free play, giving children space to enter into their own little worlds. In Waldorf early years, play is not seen as “just play”, it is the child’s most important work. Through play, children imitate, imagine, process, practise, explore and make sense of the world around them.

There are simple, natural materials to touch and discover. There is room for imagination. There is no need to perform, achieve or produce. The child is allowed to simply be.

After free play, we come together for a welcome circle, bringing everyone into a shared moment of rhythm, song and belonging. We then enjoy a beautiful nature-inspired craft activity, often linked to the season.. something simple, meaningful and nourishing for little hands and growing senses.

Our mornings also include more time for free play, followed by a healthy, wholesome snack shared together. Snack time becomes more than food; it is a moment of community, gratitude and care.

We close with a gentle song circle, full of singing, rhymes and rhythm, followed by a simple puppet show or story, a quiet, magical ending that speaks to the child’s imagination in a way that explanations often cannot.

This group is suitable for children aged 0–6 years, and babies are very welcome too. It is also a lovely space for parents, grandparents and carers to slow down, breathe, meet others and feel part of a warm local community.
